God is Able

Sometimes, the Spirit engraves the same message on my heart over and over again, until it seeps into my very being and becomes part of who I am. This is one of those messages.

"For with God, nothing is impossible." Luke 1:37

When I was in Nicaragua earlier this year, this was the verse that we shared with the kids we were ministering to. We either began or ended each session with the reciting of this verse. As each day passed, as I heard it read aloud again and again by precious little voices, even in sweltering conditions, I found myself pondering the truth of its meaning.

Does God quite literally mean that with Him, all things are possible? Like, not SOME things... but ALL things? Anything? 

​This just didn't seem logical.

But then I read Priscilla Shirer's book, God Is Able, and suddenly this made so much sense.

"Now to Him who is ABLE to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory."
​Ephesians 3:20

This is the key: He is ABLE to do all things, but He is also Sovereign. He chooses what He will and will not do. Our duty is to TRUST in Him... to trust that everything He does is for the best, that He knows better than we do, and that all things are being worked together for our good.

Like Priscilla writes in her book, "Whether or not He WILL do it is His business. But believing that He CAN - that's our business. His ability is not what's in question. It never has been. Never will be. You must be willing to settle this truth in your heart once and for all" (shirer).

I don't know why this concept took me so long to grasp. Perhaps it's because i'm apprehensive- I fear stepping out in faith and believing for something that may not come to fruition. Maybe I fear that the things that I'm praying for are not in His plans. Maybe the vastness of His power is just too great to comprehend. Whatever the reason, the truth is that He is Able to do all things.

The same God who spoke the world into being holds it in His hands today. Every piece of our lives rests in the realm of His all knowing, Sovereign reign.

If we believe that God's word is truth, we must recognize His power and ability. Regardless of what God does or when He does it, the truth is that He is capable; that His power is boundless and infinite; for with Him, nothing is impossible.
